April Getaway to Sandals Barbados 2025
Ron C (Toronto, Canada) on Apr 29, 2025
Trip to Sandals Barbados April 11-18 2025 My wife and I booked this trip when we were in St. Lucia in 2022. We have been to a few Sandals resorts on a few of the Caribbean islands. This was a trip to a different resort and to unwind from work and home. Nothing planned but relaxation. Arrival We left a rainy-wet snow Toronto airport with no problems and arrived in Barbados, a little over 5 hours later. Getting off the plane, we got on a transport bus that takes you to the terminal. There are no walkways that connected to the terminals. Once in the terminal, there are plenty personnel to point you in the right direction. We did our immigration forms online so we were directed in the quicker line. It still took 15-20 minutes to get through the immigration portion. Once we picked up our bags, we walked out to the front of the airport. There is no arrival lounge for Sandals, like in Jamaica or St. Lucia. Just a booth with a couple of people. A driver tagged our bags for the correct resort then escorted us and our bags towards the buses. We loaded our bags on a separate truck with other people’s luggage. We would not see our bags until we got into our room. The trip from the airport to the resort was short as the bus was comfortable. It was not a small minivan. The main roads are pretty smooth but the side roads are kind of bumpy and narrow. Not designed for a large bus. When we arrived, everyone but us got the cool lemongrass towel. They ran out when we got off and we were the last on the bus. Since we booked a Club room, we were taken to the Club Sandals lounge. We were given a drink and figured out if our rooms were ready. Some rooms were not ready for others so a Club Sandals member escorted them to one of the restaurants. Our room was ready, surprisingly before 3PM, as usually never have our room ready before 3PM. Room We were escorted to our room by the Club Sandals rep, Lisa. We were in the Crystal Lagoon Club Level Luxury Honeymoon Suite with Balcony Tranquillity Soaking Tub (LS), on the 4th floor. Lisa gave us the 2-minute tour of the room. Like most Club rooms, it has the King-sized bed with a small couch and big screen TV. The room has the usual coffee machine and kettle, small refrigerator with beer, wine, juices and pop (sodas). In Canada, it’s called Pop. There it is called Sodas. It had bottles of rum, whiskey, gin and vodka. The fridge was supposed to be refilled daily. More on that later. There was a tub in the washroom area with dual sinks and large shower. The shower had 2 shower heads but the rainforest showerhead was too close to the shower opening. The balcony overlooked the garden and whirlpool. If you wanted ocean view, you could see a sliver of the ocean through the palm tree. The view was fine. The room was a good size. The hallway to get to the room was pretty narrow. They had a weird trim on the bottom of the walls that looked like the walls were getting repaired but it was to make the hallways have a ocean-like motif. The room wasn’t too far from Butch’s, Soy, Kimonos, Bombay, Heart and Sol, and Greenhouse. It was a fair distance from the beach and other restaurants. The room was well taken care by our housekeeper, Grace. Well cleaned and not for lacking towels. The bed mattress was very firm and the pillows were very soft, even with 2 pillows. I know it is not the same as our bed at home but it could have been a little more comfortable. The daily refill of the fridge didn’t always happen. We are more juice, water and pop drinkers. We were given lots of water on the 1st day but had to call a couple of times to get more juices. They did supply us with a couple of cartons of milk during our stay, which is not a usual item in the fridge. Grounds We stayed on the Sandals Barbados side. It is attached to the Sandal Royal Barbados by a walkway. You can use all the same facilities on both sides. The grounds were in constant maintenance and they do a good job. Lots of flowers around the property. Some of the wild animals around were occasional cats, doves and chickens. There were supposed to be some monkeys that pass through the property but we never saw them. It was about a 5-minute walk from our room to the beach or the main pool near the beach. The main pool for Sandals Barbados is a little small but they would have a swim-up bar there, occasional pool volleyball and a small basket rim to play on. There is chairs around the pool with umbrellas. I did not like sitting there because the Mariners, Spices, and Schooner restaurants were wrapped around the pool and a lot of foot traffic moving through. We were able to find chairs under umbrellas or palm trees on the beach. We didn’t have too much difficulty finding chairs during the day so we didn’t have to try get up early to find a seat. There a server that would come by every so often that would get drinks for people on the chairs. The other bars were not too far to get up and get your own. The beach itself was nice with soft sand. There was some seaweed on the beach but it gets cleaned every so often. The beach was a good length for walking and you could jog up and down if you wanted. The wind was from the ocean help keep the area cool but not the water. It was a good temperature but the waves were building. People were going in the water and it was good for anyone who wanted to use the sailboats. Some of the waves could knock you down or backwards when you are in the water. The beaches are public so they are some locals that want to sell you something. We did see security and the resort butlers come by in the afternoon to grab the cooler that the visitors would use. Apparently, some locals will ‘confiscate’ the coolers for the contents. The one issue we had on the beach was some people would smoke at their chairs. Even with the good breeze, the smoke would flow down wind. You are allowed smoke on the beach. It is just inconsiderate to other guests. We, and a few others, had to move due to smokers on the beach. Restaurants Between Sandals Barbados and Sandals Royal Barbados, there are 20 restaurants to choose from during the day. For a 7-day trip, we could not visit them all. There are a couple of buffets for breakfast and some a la carte breakfast restaurants. For lunch, there are some sit-down restaurants for lunch or buffets. There was burgers, sandwiches and pizza options. There are different selections for sit-down dinner with different food types. For breakfast, we usually went to the buffet. We went to the a la carte at the La Parisienne, at the top of the building next to the infinity pool. There was always a line up due to limited seating. We like the Eggs Benedict at the a la carte restaurants. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the American Tavern. One day they had a speciality waffle of mint and coconut. It was really good. Sadly, they did not have a speciality waffle day again. You can still have waffles, pancakes or French toast. The buffets here have a lot of different smoothies at breakfasts. The food here was very good. We always had a tasty meal. I guess our best meal was at Neptune’s, the Mediterranean style. We ate there twice. The speciality drink was good too. We gave Butch’s Chophouse another try. We did not have a good experience at Butch’s at Sandals Montego Bay, as it did not live up to the hype. They got it more than right at this one. The steak could melt in your mouth and was cooked correctly. I have had steaks in NYC, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary and this was probably one of the best steaks I have had. Our disappointment was at the Merry Monkey. The food was fine but the service was lacking. We went on the Sunday night that they server slow roast ribeye. It was a little busy when we arrived because the seating was limited. The bartenders at the Merry Monkey are very good and fast. We had to wait for our table, which is fine. When we finally got our table, it took a long time from when we got our appetisers to our main course. Another couple that were seated at the same time as us, had their full meal and left before we got our main course. It was around 2 hours for dinner there. The only good part was the main course food came out hot. The snack game is strong at this resort with Sweet and Salty for gourmet donuts or Café de Paris with ice cream or snack cakes. You can get speciality coffees at either place as well. Activities While this trip was for rest and relaxation, we didn’t get involved with the activities on the property. Did see the playmakers running activities at the different pools. We only made it to a couple of night entertainment. We didn’t stay long but the performers are very talents, at least the singers we saw perform. We also did not go on any paid off property excursions. Capt. Larry was cruising the beach, getting people to go on his tours. I did do the free snorkeling trip with Sandals. You will be taken to the harbour in downtown Bridgeport. It is about a 20-minute ride from the resort. There is one boat for scuba and one boat for snorkeling. We motored a short distance from the harbour to the dive site. I was concerned with the number of boats at the site but each group was respectful of each other. There were some sunken boats to make a reef for the fish. With the sunken boats, there were a lot more fish to see. Besides the usually fish you see on the dive, there was a tarpon, sea turtle and a stingray. These were a good size and used to the divers around them. I thought this was one of the better snorkel trips I have been on with Sandals. Overall Sandals Barbados was a good trip for us. As stated before, it was to relax and unwind. Overall the room was clean and comfortable. We had everything we needed in there. The location was okay. It was in a quiet end of the resort but not a far walk to the beach, pools or restaurants. The bed could have been more comfortable. The restaurant food was overall pretty good. Most meals were very flavourful. Outside the long dinner at The Merry Monkey, most meals were around an hour long. Our biggest choice on this trip was where to eat our meals Even though we had a plan, plans changed with our mood. Most of the staff were friendly. Easy to say “Hello” or “Good morning” with a smile and they usually loosened up. Sandals Barbados staff may not be as out going as staff at Jamaican Sandals but start talking to them, not ordering them, and they will talk with you. The staff were very accommodating with our requests and wanted to help you enjoy your time on the resort. Even when you leave, the staff will sing their goodbye song. Of course, the big question that people will ask, especially if you have made it through this review, is will we go back to this resort? Simple answer, no. It is not because it was a bad resort. We enjoyed our time and we wanted to experience other Sandals resorts. There was not anything that stood out for us that says we really liked it. It satisfactorily met our needs for a get away and for someone else makes the food. We have been to many Caribbean countries and resorts so some of the features we come across are similar to other places. Thanks for reading.
